The "Japanese Cupboard" festival 2022 in Volgograd – how did it go?

Last Sunday, the 10th Japanese School Alternative Festival (better known as the "Japanese Cupboard" for short), was held at Maksim Gorky Volgograd Regional Library. As you might remember, the event was co-organized by the "Volgograd-Hiroshima" Friendship Society and the aforementioned Library with the participation of many youth clubs from Volgograd and the Volgograd region. During the festival, each room was an open door to a new fantasy world which the participating clubs filled with props, decorations and characters from their favorite movies, books, games, anime series, etc.

Adventure-seekers were gravitating towards the "Dungeons and Dragons" role-playing board game, as well as to the "Inn of the Last Home" inspired by the "Dragonlance" universe.

A place of honor was given to the Land of the Rising Sun, from which the very format of the festival is borrowed. Guests could go on a hunt for Japanese evil spirits, have their fortune foretold by a Shinto priestess, play the "100 Poems by 100 Poets" quiz (albeit with abstracts from the Russian literature), learn to fold origami and discover themselves in the shoes of regular Japanese students – by visit an improvised class room.

Book lovers, too, had something to look forward to: like a poetry recitation and a rhyming tournament, a review of the XX century Japanese literature and the "From Summer into Autumn" slideshow about Japanese nature and seasonal festivals.

High-tech buffs went straight for cybersports and Cyberpunk 2077. The Festival featured a "Guilty Gear" gaming tournament, and within a walking distance, one could play at being a law enforcement officer in the Night City and practice sharpshooting with foam rubber bullets.

Fans of crafts could learn how to make pins for their backpacks and try themselves at opening 3D-printed puzzle boxes.

Many festival guests came dressed in carnival costumes. On the second floor of the Library, a cosplay class was held, where visitors were introduced to the basics of acting and walking on stage.

As previously, prizes were awarded to organizers of the best "room", makers of the best costume and authors of the best sketch art. This year, artists were asked to portray the kami (guardian spirit) of a Library.
