"Shelter for Migratory Birds", Yana Temiz

In honor of our Turkish sister-city, let us plunge into a psychological thriller which takes place in Turkey, not far from the popular resort of Kuşadası.

Why did we choose it? Firstly, because its author Yana Temiz is our compatriot who has lived in Turkiye for many years. And secondly, because those who read this book call it a full-fledged slice of Turkish life and lament that Temiz' novels (by the way, there are several of them) are being translated into Russian too slowly for the liking of her fan base. Well, now we know what to look forward to on the shelves of bookstores.

What is the "Shelter for Migratory Birds" about?

It's a family holiday in Turkiye, and so a big family has gathered in the house of the patriarch – an old man with a grave disease. His adult children, grandchildren and their spouses make up a very motley company, despite their kinship. Among them is our primary protagonist – Maya, the youngest son's Russian wife, who is yet to accustom herself to all local rules and traditions.

The author gradually introduces us to each member of this family. Pretty soon it turns out that each of them has at least once dwelled upon the thought of how good it would be if Maya wasn't there... And not only for inheritance reasons.

Will anyone have the courage to see the right opportunity to get rid of Maya – and run with it? Or is everything just the paranoia of a pregnant woman?
