"Déjà vu" (1989)

This weekend, we really felt like reminiscing of the days when the biggest problem was an undercover American gangster, and the most efficient weapon against this gangster's was the time-managing enthusiasm of the Soviet pioneers.

"Déjà vu" is a light comedy hiding under the guise of a criminal action film.

The year is 1925. The USSR is busy building a socialistic society, and the USA – surviving the Prohibition Law. American bootleggers would very much prefer to care as little as possible about the former while striving for prosperity at the expense of the latter... But one of their comrades-in-arms has a different idea: he flees to Odessa to build his own moonshine empire and smuggle the precious beverage into the US – in frightening quantities and right under the nose of his former accomplices.

The honorary mission to dispose of the traitor is given to a gangster named John Pollack, who speaks Russian and has extensive experience in eliminating unwanted people. But his spying and fighting skills stand no chance against the hospitality of the USSR Ministry of Transport, the local government and the Komsomol activists. Poor Pollack accidentally turns out to be the 100th passenger of the voyage from New York to Odessa, which means that he is in for a extensive cultural program, initiation into the ranks of Soviet pioneers, numerous interviews with the local journalists (and the local jazzmen who are most enthusiastic about learning some new tricks first-hand) and even starring in the legendary film by Sergei Eisenstein.

…All of which leaves Pollack with little to no time and chance to complete the mission in question!

Who will win in this clash of cultures and professional challenges?
