Hiroshima and its six sister-cities (2022), Madeleine Holmes

By the happiest of coincidences, it is in the year of the 50th anniversary of the cooperation between Volgograd and Hiroshima that this book by a Canadian publicist and researcher Madelyne Holmes was published – the book dedicated to the cooperation between the Japanese city and its twins from all over the world. To make matters even better, our international relations directorate and the Volgograd branch of the Peace Foundation were among those who assisted the author in gathering the relevant information and materials for this oeuvre!

Hiroshima has established relations with 10 sister-cities, but the book features six of them: the Chinese Chongqing, the Korean Tegu, the German Hanover, the Canadian Montreal, the American Honolulu and our Volgograd.

What brings these cities closer? What initiatives are they doing together? How do they cooperate in the areas of culture, education and, of course, the main one – peacekeeping?

Of course, we have only read about Volgograd so far, but many times over – and this is despite having translated part of the materials ourselves.

But some of the author's sources were translated by the Internet, and so, for example, the famous inscription "better a small help than a lot of pity" on the Coventry tablecloth turned "little help is better than big sympathy". In other words, we may not recommend using the book as an indispensable source for further research, but it still remains an excellent reading for those interested in intercultural relations.

Hiroshima Street, a Japanese garden next to the Tsaritsyn Fire Observation Tower, peace ceremonies in the panorama museum, the International Youth Conference for Peace in the Future, teleconferences by the "Volgograd-Hiroshima" Friendship Society, and even the school festival "Japanese Cupboard" – all this is mentioned in the text!
