Volgograd residents and guests paid tribute to the memory of Stalingrad defenders
The festive events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazi troops by the Soviet troops in the Battle of Stalingrad were held in Volgograd on February 1 and 2. They started with a solemn wreath laying ceremony at the Eternal Flame, which marks the Common Grave of the defenders of the Red Tsaritsyn and the soldiers of the 62nd and 64th Armies who died defending Stalingrad. Volgograd Mayor Vladimir Marchenko led the procession of Volgograd residents and guests laying scarlet carnations at the memorial.
The ceremony united veterans of the Great Patriotic War, Children of Stalingrad, leaders of local governments, law enforcement agencies, Volgograd garrison's military units, Honorary residents of Volgograd and the Volgograd region, public associations representatives, cadets, as well as numerous guests of our hero-city.
Among them were the Mayors of Volgograd's partner-cities in Russia and abroad: Chairman of Vitebsk Executive Committee Nikolai Orlov (Belarus), Head of Tskhinval City Administration Geno Kadzhaev (South Osetia) and Head of the Elista City Administration Shafran Tepshinov.
The leaders of inter-municipal organizations and associations, of which Volgograd is a member, also arrived in our city. They represented the Eurasian Regional Branch of the World Organization "United Cities and Local Authorities", the "International Assembly of Capitals and Large Cities of the CIS" Association (IAC), the Union of Russian Cities and the Volga region Cities Association.
A delegation of very special guests was led by Evgeny Tverdokhlebov, Head of the Youth Policy Department of Novosibirsk Mayor's Office: with him, a watch of the Novosibirsk honorary youth guard arrived in our city. On holidays, the youngsters held the Memory Watch on the Alley of Heroes together with their Volgograd peers.
