INTRODUCTION TO SICHUAN JINQIANBAN (CLAPPERS WITH COINS)

Jinqianban, a traditional folk quyi art form in Sichuan, originated in the Song Dynasty and has a history of more than 300 years. Because the bamboo clappers, the accompanying music instrument to the art form, are equipped with ancient copper coins, they produce jointly both the sounds of bamboo clappers and metal when they are played. Therefore, the art form is called Jinqianban, literally, the clappers with coins.

In order to let students from Volgograd have a better understanding of this Sichuan Jinqianban quyi art form, we will introduce it from three aspects:

The first is about the characteristics, mainly including the lyrics and musical instruments of the art form. Jinqianban is performed in local dialect, alternatively in singing and speaking. The lyrics are easy to understand and Sichuan folk custom is written in a humorous way. The major musical instrument to the performance is composed of three bamboo clappers, representing three traditional elements of Chinese culture, namely, heaven, earth and people, which also implies the good wishes of Chinese people for "harmony between heaven, earth and people".

The second is about the protection and innovation. I will mainly analyze the reasons for the declination in the lineage of the art form and measures we have adopted to keep it alive. Particularly, through integration with modern music elements, the professional institutions continuously reform the repertoire in an innovative way, and reactivate people's interest and love for this art form.

The third is about the popularization of the art form at schools where students learn and pass it to more people. Schools now introduce Jinqianban into music classes to help students understand and learn the knowledge and performance of the art form. In addition, they invite professional Jinqianban performers to teach students more professional skills, and make new programs for performance.
