Introduction to Clay Zhongguojie (Chinese Knot)

Together with the works by Volgograd students, within the "Folk Art of Russia and China in Volgograd and Chengdu" we will also be treating you to the presentations by the students from our Chinese sister-city. Today, Xiang Xiaoming and Zheng Qiyue will tell us about the traditional Chinese knot… made from a very unusual material.

Zhongguojie (Chinese knot) is a traditional art form with profound culture deposits. It represents the wishes of Chinese people for a better life and is deeply favored by the people. As we may know that making Chengdu mianren (dough figurine) is a traditional way to make human figurines, flowers, birds and animals of various shapes with dough, which is one of the representatives of Sichuan intangible cultural heritage. Making clay zhongguojie is a way to use the method of making Chengdu mianren to make zhongguojie with clay. It is not only the popularization of the Sichuan intangible cultural heritage mianren, but also an innovative way to design zhongguojie in a different material.

To let students from Volgograd better understand zhongguojie made of clay, we will introduce it from three aspects.

The first is about the connotation and application of zhongguojie: Zhongguojie may be made in different styles. Each style is made in a different way and each different making represents different meanings. Zhongguojie is widely used in our daily life, such as the patterns on our clothes, or for home decorations, etc.

The second is about how to make zhougguojie with the method of making mianren that is unique to Chengdu. Chengdu mianren is made of dough and dough shares the same properties with clay, so we use clay to create zhongguojie.

The third is about the activities of making zhongguojie with clay our schools have carried out. Students learn and make clay zhongguojie in art classes, school club gatherings, New Year's Day and other occasions. They introduce how to use clay to make zhongguojie to students from Volgograd. We hope you can make your own zhongguojie after learning.

"Jie", or literally "knot", also means "contract" and "covenant" in ancient China. Now we hope, with the Chinese knot zhongguojie you personally designed and made, a deep friendship will grow in your heart with the students from Volgograd!
