Volgograd residents were mentioned among the world’s most outstanding women during a flashmob in Coventry

As you know, in March 2022, Coventry City Council announced its decision to suspend its sister-city relations with Volgograd. However, this did not prevent our cities from celebrating the International Women's Day together!

In Coventry, this date was celebrated on a grand scale: the entire month of March was declared "Women's Month", and numerous stakeholders, including the City Council, cultural institutions and public organizations, filled it with lectures, exhibitions and thematic events.

Among the latter was the Pink Trees campaign implemented with the support of the Godiva Trust: six trees in Coventry's various locations had been painted pink, and everyone was invited to decorate their branches with cut-out leaves and write on each of them a name of an outstanding woman, dead or still alive.

Participants of the event could choose their own relatives, teachers, celebrities or historical figures. Another suggestion by the organizers was use ribbons to tie these leaves to the trees, in order to emphasize the historical connection between the development of the local industry and the production of ribbons.

With the support of Coventry community members, the Pink Tree in the Coventry Cathedral was decorated with leaves bearing the names of two Volgograd residents. They were Alexandra Pakhmutova, a poet and composer whose songs resonated throughout the USSR; and Olga Bezborodova, a professional teacher and a non-stop leader of Volgograd International Friendship Club since 1969. "Volgograd City Friendship," added our Coventry friends.
