March 13 is the International Planetarium Day
On this occasion, we celebrate our local Volgograd Planetarium! Its equipment was a gift offered to the Soviet people in the 1950s by the workers of a people's factory located in Eastern Germany and named after Karl Marx.
It was the factory's initiative and wish that the future planetarium would be built in Stalingrad, the city of military glory. At that time, the only USSR cities to have planetariums were the two capitals – Moscow and Kyiv.
The gift to the defenders of Stalingrad was made by the workers of the Zeis Werke plant in the city of Jena – all over the period of just 4 months. At the suggestion of the Stalingrad architects, the dome of the building was crowned with a statue of a woman releasing a dove of peace into the sky.
