Coventry Street renovations on their way: a historical staircase will be restored in Volgograd
The granite staircase in the down end of Coventry Street will be renovated along with the rest of the embankment. As the Mayor of Volgograd Vladimir Marchenko promised on February 19, the respective works will start as soon as the construction workers have it finished with the amphitheater and the pedestrian bridge.
Coventry Street, which was named after Volgograd's first sister-city and co-founder of the international twinning movement, is located in the Central district of our city, connecting the Chuikova and Sovietskaya streets.
Walking up to its one end, you will find a portrait sculpture of the Russian writer and diplomat Alexander Griboyedov and the Outpatients Clinic No.3, and walking down to its other end, – this very staircase leading to the Embankment's upper terrace.
Volgograd administration is planning to restore both the steps and the railings, add some lighting and refurbish the adjacent green area.
Let us be reminded!
- there are no buildings in Coventry Street per se: each of them is instead assigned to the larger neighboring streets Chuikova and Sovietskaya;
- one of Volgograd rock bands created in 2015 is named after Coventry Street – the band is still famous for their covers and original songs (with guitar, flute and ukulele, no less).
