For the first time in its history, the UCLG World Organization will be chaired by a Russian Mayor

The UCLG (full name – "United Cities and Local Governments") is the United Nation's key partner in the area of local government. It was by its initiative the autonomous goal of sustainable urban development was included in the list of SDGs 2030.

The UCLG unites over 240 thousand cities all over the world, regrouped into 9 sections. One of them – the Eurasia section – has been, since 2006, led by the Mayor of Kazan Mr. Ilsur Metshin.

It is his candidature that was supported by the majority of the UCLG World Council members at the recent elections.

As pointed out by the Eurasia section's website, the UCLG is the only organization in the world to recognize the Eurasian geopolitical region. It is most encouraging to see that, after many years of successful work, the UCLG has also recognized the personal merits of Mayor Metshin.

Earlier, the rank of the UCLG presidents had been held by the Mayor of Paris (France), the Mayor of Istanbul (Turkey), and the Mayor of Johannesburg (South Africa).
