A street tram named after Volgograd was launched in Chemnitz

On August 20, a new tram will be coursing through the streets of our German partner-city of Chemnitz – moreover, it will be a tram dedicated to Volgograd. Its saloon is decorated with the symbols of our city, and the cabin outside bears the word «Wolgograd».

The inauguration ceremony for the tram was organized in the same solemn manner as the baptizing of a new ship. Among the honorary participants, there were the Mayor of Chemnitz Mr. Sven Schulze and his retired predecessor – Mr. Eberhard Langer, who signed the Cooperation Agreement between Volgograd and Chemnitz in 1988.

To its first journey, the Volgograd tram departed with the musical accompaniment of Russian folk songs kindly provided by the members of the "Kolorit", association for cultural cooperation dressed in Russian folk clothes.

Let us be reminded that 14 new trams with steep thresholds appeared in Chemnitz in the end of the previous year as a part of the city's program to create a more accessible environment.

Each of the trams will one day be named after one or the other of Chemnitz' partner-cities.
