A new video about Volgograd by Alena Karpova, Diana Batyrova and Ilya Babichev
In the new episode of the "Nostalgia Tourist" project, we introduce to you a group of three video operators and amateur journalists: third-year students of the Volgograd Institute of Management – RANEPA branch Alena Karpova and Diana Batyrova and their sempai Ilya Babichev.
Alena is a fan of sport and enjoys making art with her own hands. Her life motto is "to go to the core of things and avoid superficial judging".
Diana, who has come to Volgograd from the Astrakhan region, is already acting in a theatre and is the president of Student Cinema Club. Besides, she is an experienced tourist who has been travelling alone since the age of 14!
Ilya, a student of the Law Department, is the coordinator of an urban touristic project and, for that reason probably, knows Volgograd well enough to talk about it for hours.
In their video, the three students decided to address the city's historic part, and no place can pull it better than the Old Sarepta – a museum reserve established in the territory of a German settlement. In the 18th century, this place was a jewel of the old Tsaritsyn: snow-white walls, herbal aromas from the old drugstore, echoes of the church organ, and, of course, mustard oil!
What reasoning would you use to persuade foreign friends to visit Volgograd?
Alena Karpova: I would entice them with our natural reserves! The only thing better that a watermelon eaten on a sandy beach in summer is only a game of volleyball on the same beach.
Diana Batyrova: Go somewhere away from the city center! For example, to the Krasnoarmeisky district, to sit under the largest in Europe Lenin's statue on the embankment.
Ilya Babichev: I will be brief – our city is worth visiting because of its carnation-scented summer nights.
Now imagine yourself a tourist: let's say you have one day in a completely unfamiliar city. Where would you go, or what would you do first?
Alena Karpova: What I like best is travelling to "unpopular" places, with very few tourists. Only then can you truly feel the culture of the area, its indigenous character. And of course, I would like to make friends with some local residents; that's a must-do!
Diana Batyrova: Get in touch with the local residents and walk until my feet feel numb! Every town has a secret hidden just for you, and it is waiting to be discovered.
Ilya Babichev: I would go somewhere where I could taste local food – a new place is best understood through food.
