Silver-Age volunteers are helping Volgograd children become A-students

In January, a project "Back to A and B" (Opiat' chetyre i pyat') was put in action in Volgograd, which is all about intergenerational cooperation. Within its frame, silver-age volunteers are helping children from large families learn and revise difficult topics from various school subjects. In 2020, this project won the All-Russian Grant Competition "Young at Heart".

The project's author Galina Kukushkina decided to work on online-tutorship during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it became obvious that not only children but also their parents were struggling with the increased amount of independent learning. Private tutors usually charge significant sums, and here was that the elderly volunteers have come to everyone's aid. Before their retirement, many of them were highly qualified specialists in their respective fields.

One of the project's partners id the "Proryv" volunteer center of Volgograd State University, that has helped the silver volunteers to quickly master ZOOM. Regional civic organization "Mnogodetny Volgograd" assisted in forming study groups with 9-10 middle-schoolers and 2 volunteers in each.

Volunteer tutors meet their charges once a week to look into the most difficult parts of the All-Russian Test (VPR) and homework. Currently, the project is aimed at the children from the 4th and the 6th school years.

A separate group of volunteers, this time – psychologists, started working with the children's parents, too, to give them some tips on organizing and supervising their children's studies at home.
