Four movies where the top star is our partner-city Vitebsk

On December 17, we celebrate the Day of Belarus cinema! On such an occasion, we would like to share with you a selection of movies united by the town where they take place – which is our partner-city of Vitebsk.

"About a dragon on the balcony, a group of kids and a kickboard" (Pro drakona na balkone, pro rebiat i samokat, 1976)

Belarus kids were hijacking dragons long before it became a mainstream activity. A simple but heartwarming tale about a pair of schoolmates, a preschooler (who is serious beyond his age) and an old man enjoying his time off work. The first two are anxious to return their neighbor's wayward mini-crocodile into his cage, the second one is bent on keeping those scatterbrains out of trouble, and the third one wants nothing but a fresh canteen of milk. Yet, they are all in for some adventure time.

Since these adventures include a lot of running around, the watchers can treat themselves to a panorama of Vitebsk downtown.

"Station Zero" (Tochka otscheta, 1979)

On the outskirts of Vitebsk, there is a military aerodrome, which, during the 80s, became a stage for several movies about paratroopers.

"Station Zero" (by the way, an absolute cinema hit of 1980) is memorable for its music – written and performed by Vladimir Vysotsky and Marina Vladi, as well as by its unusual plot: the movie deconstructs the popular archetype of the "tough street guy", who, as opposed to numerous action movies, does not also equal a good military commander.

"Our man in San Remo" (Nash chelovek v San Remo1990)

This is a musical for those who enjoy stories about the dark side of show business and the comedies with bitter plot twists. Or for those who wonder why the brightest participants of talent shows disappear from the public view never to be heard from again.

Nikolay is a soldier wounded in action during his term in Afghanistan. To assist his recovery, he is awarded with a short vacation to the Black Sea, and his friend Alexey goes with him. Their plans change when they meet an amateur singer Tanya who earns her living by performing in cafes. Nikolay falls head over heels for her, and Alexey is angry that an obviously talented girl is wasting her life in obscurity, while far worse singers become TV starts. Together, the friends resolve to become Tanya's producers and promoters and lead her to success.

Tanya's singing scenes were filmed in Vitebsk Summer Amphitheater, the platform for the Annual International Art Festival "Slavic Bazaar".

"Chagall — Malevich" (2014)

A fictionalized life story of one of the most famous Vitebsk residents: the painter Marc Chagall. How to promote art in a small provincial town? How to walk the thin line between a public emissary and an artist? And how to stay calm and carry on if your colleague is no one else but the boisterous Kazimir Malevich?

The movie features overly difficult working conditions, the art that infiltrates life instead of imitating it (for example, how do you like streetcars painted in the avant-garde fashion?) and colleagues who turned enemies over a single year.

The movie's main character is Vitebsk itself, seen through the phantasmagoric lens of Chagall's and Malevich's paintings.
