Lady Godiva festival in Coventry
This weekend, the city of Coventry will be celebrating its annual festival dedicated to Lady Godiva – the city's medieval patroness. Her husband Earl Leofric made place for himself in the historic accounts by founding the Coventry Cathedral, thus turning the city into a center of culture and trade, and the Lady herself – by persuading her husband to abolish some heavy city taxes, which she did by winning a very peculiar bet…
The grateful descendants celebrated Godiva by making her statue in stone and dedicating to her the first Sunday of September since 1678. And ever since 1998, there has also been a major three-day-long festival in her honor complete with free concerts, lots of entertainment and public festivities. Amidst the festival's curiosities is the Parade of "Godiva Sisters" – the women representing the city's national diasporas, the colorful carnival procession where participants wear XI century clothes, live music, lots of singing, and a firework display.
Therefore, today, in our recommendations column, we are presenting to you two films about the generous and brave Lady!
Lady Godiva of Coventry, 1955
This (almost) historical drama, filmed in the middle of the previous century, is a slightly amended rendition of the original legend about Lady Godiva, where certain moments and the main characters' motivation have been artistically reinvented.
Yet, the new additions to the plot will be met with much appreciated by the fans of such period novels as "Ivanhoe" and "Rodin Hood". In this movie, Lady Godiva will join the brave Saxons in their fight against the Norman conquerors!
Lady Godiva: Back in the Saddle, 2007
And this movie takes place during the present day. Here, Godiva is not a functioning protagonist, but rather a mascot and an inspiration for the main characters – actors, historians, and social activists.
Here, they are bent on stopping the crime lords from building a casino at the historic site where Lady Godiva made its famous ride.
The movie was filmed in Coventry and about Coventry by its own residents.
