Trademark landscapes of Yunnan province – rapeseed fields
Yunnan Province, where our third Chinese sister-city Qujing lies, is often referred to as a "biological museum". The topographical and climatic differences between its different parts have made its territory a home to all natural areas at once, starting with the tropics and ending with permafrost.
Its real pride is the yellow fields of rapeseed, to which Yunnan owes its fantastically bright spring landscapes.
After rapeseed flowers have withered, their seeds are collected to be squeezed into vegetable oil. This crop is grown all around China, and blooms pretty much throughout the whole year, depending on the temperature of the area. Usually, it is in Yunnan province that rapeseed blooms the earliest.
To make matters even more wonderful, rapeseed flowers here are planted on the hills slopes at different heights, which leads to the ensuing flowers forming elaborate patterns resembling the rings of a snail shell. As a result, not only do the farmers manage to fit the maximum number of flowers into the available area, but also to attract thousands of tourists and photographers every year.
