Compatriots in Turin
The "Zemlyachestvo" Association of Russian and Russian-Speaking Compatriots has been operating in Turin for 40 years, and its work has united in the Piedmont region people from various republics of the former Soviet Union.
The "Zemlyachestvo" sees its main task in projecting an honorable image of Russia in the Italian society promoting the interest towards the country itself, its language and culture.
While preserving the Russian language, traditions and culture, the Association at the same time seeks to help the migration newcomers assimilate into the Italian society. With the assistance of the Rossotrudnichestvo office in Rome and the Russian Consulate General in Milan, it provides advice and consultations on domestic and legal issues.
When Russian stage professionals (for example, Lev Leshchenko, Valentina Tolkunova, Yuri Solomin…) came to Turin, members of the association would help to organize their reception.
Every May 9, the Association's members lay flowers at Turin Field of Glory, the burial ground the of Soviet participants of the northern Italy's liberation movement during World War II.
Turin compatriots also participate in charity work: they raised funds to help the victims of Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster, of the earthquake in Armenia, of the flood in Turin and Piedmont.
Among its most important projects, the "Zemlyachestvo" cites the establishment of the Russian Library and the opening of the "AZBUKA" school, where children from Russian, Russian-Italian and Italian families can attend classes in the Russian language, speech development, reading, history and geography of Russia, mathematics, the world around them, art and music.
