“Bulgaria: the Country and People. A Brief History”, Plamen Pavlov
After this thematic week of Bulgarian culture, we suggest everyone to polish off this experience you by reading an equally thematic book. It was written by a Bulgarian historian, poet, writer and public figure Plamen Pavlov and adapted specifically for the Russian audience. Despite the more than impressive amount of material inside, the author made his book as accessible and interesting as possible.
Already a couple of pages into the book, and we are in for some of the most fascinating facts about Bulgaria!
For example, it was through the territory of Bulgaria that the early humans came to Europe from Africa.
Such legendary historic characters as Orpheus and Spartacus, too, can be considered compatriots of the modern Bulgarians. The outstanding singer is a collective image of Thracian priest (this historical region now is divided between Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey), and the unbowing rebel was the leader of the equally Thracian tribe.
Finally, John Atanasoff, the father of the modern computer, had Bulgarian roots, too.
Led by the author, we will follow the history of Bulgaria from the ancient times (it was on the territory of this country that the oldest gold jewelry was found) through an intense struggle for independence, two world wars and to the modern times.
