Madrasapattinam (2010)
The main characters of the movie are an Englishwoman and an Indian, separated not only by their national differences, but also social disparity. She is a governor's daughter, and he is washing clothes for a living while aspiring to become a professional wrestler.
Yet, this is not the main reason we included this film in our thematic column.
The romance between the main characters has flourished in 1947. In a few months, India will triumph in its struggle for independence, and all English officials and their families will be forced to leave the country forever.
It is only in the recollections of the main heroine, though, that we see the aforementioned historical events and the tragic tales of star-crossed lovers unravelling to their background. By the beginning of the film, she is already am elderly woman dying from a vascular pathology. Still, she decides to come back to India in an attempt to find the person she loved so much in her youth. Will she be able to win in this race against death and time?
And now to the second reason we are writing about this film. Madras is the name under which Chennai, Volgograd's twin-city was known until the middle of the previous century.
The town which became the stage to the film's events is also its rightful character and hero, along with the young lovers. Its streets, trams and a marvelous train station could easily hold their own against Shakespeare's Verona.
It is for this city, most of all, that the filming crew is proclaiming its love.
