Reading recommendations: “Negotiations. Organization. Protocol. Etiquette” by Oleg Davtian and Vladimir Zapevalov
Today our reading recommendations continue with the "heavy artillery" on the topic of business and political negotiations – and their organization. The author of the book "Negotiations. Organization. Protocol. Etiquette" (Peregovory. Organizatsiya. Protokol. Etiket) is the Editor-in-Chief of the "Konsul" magazine Mr. Oleg Davtian, who has already written five works in the "A Diplomat's Library" series – each time working together with prominent protocol and etiquette experts from Russia and abroad.
In this particular case, his co-author was Vladimir Zapevalov, a Saint-Petersburg representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, an Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary.
On the pages of this book, not only do the authors offer practical recommendations on the diplomatic etiquette, but also cite historic examples and concrete cases from the times of World War I until nowadays, including the negotiations about bringing home the USSR nationals stuck in the territory of the Nazi Germany in 1941 – as well as the more recent political events. For example, many will be excited to recognize one of the book's illustrations as the memetic photo of Angela Merkel and Donald Trump during the G7 Summit of 2018.
Providing a thoughtful immersion in the diplomatic discourse, Oleg Davtian and Vladimir Zapevalov are carefully explaining not only the negotiations formal and superficial layer, but also the political stance of the Russian Federation based on its rights, interests and liabilities in the international arena.
One must especially commend the fifth chapter (dedicated to the national peculiarities of the negotiation process in Arabian countries, Australia, China, England, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Scandinavia, and the USA) and the helpfully supplied examples of the documents that are an inalienable part to the job description of any diplomat – or generally a person who is dealing with foreign delegations on a regular basis.
