History

Twin-cities

Located 100 km away from Brussels, Liège is a capital of the Walloon province of the same name.

Known as “the ardent city”, the free-thinking Liège has spent several centuries defending itself from Spanish and French hostility, and during World War 1 managed to stop the German army in its tracks long enough to provide for the timely mobilization of Belgian and French soldiers. For this heroic act, Liège became a city-knight of the Legion of Honor.

Earlier famous as a center of armory, coal and steel, today’s Liège is also popular as a major port and a tourist destination.

It is in the Liège province that the “Stalingrad Professor” was buried – Evgheny Dotsenko, one of the active members of the Belgian Resistance during World War 2. Since 1959, Liège and Volgograd have been twin-cities.
