2015 - the signing of the Cooperation Agreement.

Elista is a city in the South of Russia, the capital of the Republic of Kalmykia.

Founded in 1865, it was renamed “Stepnoy” in 1944 and returned to its original name “Elista” in 1957.

In the second half of the XX century, the city turned into a major economic, cultural and educational center of Kalmykia, and since 1999 has also been one of Russia’s centers of Buddhism. It is here that the largest in Europe Buddhist temple is located – “Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni”.

In the recent decades, Elista acquired its ingenuous national atmosphere reflecting the unique and indigenous Kalmyk culture. The city is famous for its beautiful orient architecture and is commonly known under the name of the “Steep Capital”.

The partnership between Volgograd and Elista was officially established in 2015 with the signing of the Agreement on Cooperation.

There is a street in Volgograd called Elistinskaya, and another one called “Kalmytskaya” (both in the Kirovsky district).
