Founded in 1792 under the orders of Alexander Suvorov, Tiraspol has been the capital of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic since 1990.
During World War 2, Tiraspol had lived through several strenuous years of Romanian occupation and was later awarded the Order of the Great Patriotic War of the 1st degree.
Volgograd and Tiraspol became twinned in 2006. Interestingly, they both can boast having “satellite cities” situated nearby and with major hydroelectric power stations in their territories.
The relations of intercity cooperation are also connecting Tiraspol with Sukhumi and Tskhinvali – in other words, all four our cities are twinned to each other.
