Novosibirsk is a city in the West of Siberia, the administrative center of the Siberian Federal Okrug, the Novosibirsk region and the Novosibirsk district.

Founded in 1893 as a Novo-Nikolaevsk village, in ten years’ time it was already a city. In 1912, it became the first municipal formation in Russia to make comprehensive primary education available and inalienable to everyone. In 1926 it was renamed Novosibirsk.
Under the USSR, the city turned into a major industrial center and became world famous after a Science Campus or Akademgorodok (Novosibirsk Scientific Center of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Science) was established in its territory, encompassing dozens of research institutes and higher educational institutions.

For the courage, resilience and heroism demonstrated by the city’s defenders during the Great Patriotic War of 1941 – 1945, Novosibirsk was officially declared a “City of Military and Labor Glory” in 2015 and a “City of Labor Valor” in 2020.

Today’s Novosibirsk is a major Siberian center of trade, business, culture, transport, education and science. The city is commonly known as a “Siberian Capital”. It is the third most populated city in Russia.

The partnership between Volgograd and Novosibirsk was officially established in 2005 with the signing of the Agreement on Cooperation.

There is a street in Volgograd called Novosibirskaya (in the Sovietsky district).
