“Blue Roads of the Earth”: Volgograd Connects Rivers from Chinese Sister-Cities
A unique exhibition titled "Blue Roads of the Earth" is currently on display at the Children Art Gallery in Volgograd. The exhibition showcases the best works from an international children art competition themed "About Ourselves and the World" which focused on the subject of rivers this year.
Young artists from across Russia (including those from Rudnya, Volzhsky, Novokuznetsk, Omsk, Kaluga, Vladimir, and other cities) participated in the contest, alongside children from four other countries. The participants submitted their work across two categories: "Fine Arts" and "Decorative and Applied Arts."
Participants from Volgograd's Chinese sister-cities (Qujing, Jilin, and Chengdu) also took part, dedicating their artwork to the great rivers of their home regions. The Yellow River (Huang He), the second-longest river in China, stretching 5,464 kilometers, holds profound significance for the Chinese people; it is often called the "cradle of Chinese civilization," as its waters have sustained the farmers of Northern China for centuries.
The artworks also captured smaller urban rivers. A striking example of the affection Chinese schoolchildren hold for their local landscapes is the Tianfu River. Following an extensive ecological restoration project in the 1990s (which earned Chengdu a UN "World Habitat Award"), the riverbanks were transformed into a popular recreational area for local residents. The site now features cycling and walking paths, and in the evenings, the iconic Anshun Bridge is illuminated.
A formal awards ceremony was held on October 15 for the winners and runners-up across four age categories: children under 7, 8–10, 11–13, and 14–18 years old.
It is worth noting that events like these serve as a prime example of people's diplomacy. They help sister-cities maintain strong cultural and social ties, while traveling exhibitions act as a vital bridge, bringing together cultures that share a common spirit.
The exhibition "The Blue Roads of the Earth" will be on display at the Children Art Gallery in Volgograd until October 30. We invite all art lovers and anyone who appreciates the beauty of the natural world to visit the exhibition and see how a shared commitment to protecting and preserving the beauty of our rivers brings nations together!
