A “Red” Tourist’s Guide to Volgograd – Chekistov Square

This video (which can be watched by the link here) was brought to you by students of Gymnasium No.5 in the Voroshilovsky District of Volgograd: Mary SHMAVONIAN (16), Arina SHCHERBAKOVA (15), and Anna GOLOKTIONOVA (18). The ladies have also kindly agreed to answer a few of our questions about themselves and the topic of their project – the square that is, sadly, is not always given enough attention by tour guides.

Why did you choose this location for your video?

Mary Shmavonian: Chekistov Square in Volgograd is not only one of the city's central and most recognizable squares, but also a place of deep historical and memorial significance.

Anna Goloktionova: This place is rarely mentioned when talking about the Battle of Stalingrad, so we decided to highlight that the role the chekists played during the war was equally important.

Arina Shcherbakova: Because this place reminds us of Russian history, maintains connections between generations, and is one of Volgograd's most famous monuments.

Gymnasium No.5 is a recurring participant of Volgograd's international projects, and the video's makers know the history of not only their city but also its Chinese sisters. They even imagined what they would do if they could spend a whole day in each of them.

Anna Goloktionova: I would primarily like to learn about the historical development of Chengdu. I would also like to explore nature, visit parks, and historical sites.

Arina Shcherbakova: I hope to learn more about our sister cities through this project.

Mary Shmavonian: I know Chengdu best, but I'd like to visit Jilin. If I had just one day in Jilin, I would try to see its most interesting and atmospheric places to get a feel for the spirit of this amazing city in northeastern China.

What are our participants' expectations for the project? We asked them before, and now, as we wait for our international friends to submit their own videos, we hope each of them will come true.

Arina Shcherbakova: I want to learn more interesting facts in this area and gain useful experience participating in these events.

Mary Shmavonian: I believe this experience will bring me many new impressions, help me gain confidence, and open up interesting prospects for the future! 🎬

Anna Goloktionova: I hope participating in the project will bring me new knowledge, useful skills, and positive emotions.

Let it truly be so! Thank you for your video!
