German activists arrived in Volgograd for the Victory Day
From May 6 to 12, a delegation from Germany—representatives of the German-Russian Friendship Society—visited Volgograd. This organization has been helping to build ties between our countries since 1972, collaborating with Rossotrudnichestvo and the Russkiy Mir Foundation.
The delegation consisted of seven people. They arrived to participate in the May 9 celebrations and meet with Volgograd activists and cultural figures.
The German guests reached the summit of the memorial to the Heroes of the Stalingrad Battle on the Mamay Hill, laid flowers at the Eternal Flame, visited the Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum, and the memorial in Rossoshki, where they honored the memory of Russian soldiers and perished civilians by leaving red carnations at their graves.
The delegation also met with representatives of the Russian Peace Foundation. Among them were honorary citizens of Volgograd: Yuri Starovatykh, head of the regional branch of this organization; Helvi Lattu, chairman of the "Defenders and Residents of Siege of Leningrad" society; and Alexander Bunin, head of the "Battle of Stalingrad" foundation.
The meeting focused primarily on working with civil society and youth: how to preserve the truth about World War II, prevent the rewriting of history, and the role of public diplomacy in this regard.
The German delegation included independent journalist Patrick Baab. In his home country, he has repeatedly faced pressure for his position on Russian-German relations, including for traveling to Donbas during the 2022 referendums and writing a book about his visit, "On Both Sides of the Front" (which, incidentally, has now been translated into Russian).
Most of the guests were visiting Volgograd for the first time. Their most vivid and long-lasting impression, of course, was the Mamay Hill- "one of the most powerful and impressive memorials" they had ever seen.
